Building HVAC

Pool HVAC

Natatoriums are among the most demanding indoor environments in building design. Properly managing humidity, condensation, air movement, and energy recovery is essential for both occupant comfort and longterm building durability. Polar delivers purposebuilt HVAC solutions for pools and natatoriums that balance performance, efficiency, and operational simplicity.

  • Custom and offtheshelf dehumidification systems
  • Natatorium HVAC design
  • Heat recovery systems that reuse waste heat for pool water heating and domestic hot water preheat

FEATURED PROJECT | BUILDING HVAC

Oak Bay Recreation Centre Pool Dehumidifier

Polar Engineering worked closely with the District of Oak Bay to design a site-specific energy recovery dehumidifier for their pool. The system recovers waste heat from the dehumidifier exhaust to offset the boiler loop loads at an impressive 76˚ C, reducing the natural gas consumption of the pool heating, domestic hot water, and HVAC loads. The system reduced facility operating costs by over $27,000 annually while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 60%. The natural gas load of the facility was reduced by over 4,000 GJ annually, which won the project a grant award of $250,000 through Fortis BC. The dehumidifier setpoints are controlled through the existing facility DDC, allowing operators full transparency over the operation of the system. The dehumidifier ramps up and down to maintain the desired space setpoints and includes controls to meet fresh air requirements of the pool area. This ensures that healthy air is always circulated through the pool space.
